That Fall Feeling: Books and Films to Get into the Fall Spirit

by Brandon Priddy, Public Services Librarian

I absolutely adore the Fall season and to celebrate the first day of Fall (as of this writing) I wanted to assemble a short list of movies and books that will help get you into the autumn spirit.  I will be writing a few more Halloween specific lists later, so keep an eye out for those if you want some really spooky books and movies!

Books:

Autumn by Ali Smith:  “Autumn. Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. How about Autumn 2016? Daniel is a century old. Elisabeth, born in 1984, has her eye on the future. The United Kingdom is in pieces, divided by a historic, once-in-a-generation summer. Love is won, love is lost. Hope is hand-in-hand with hopelessness. The seasons roll round, as ever.  Ali Smith's new novel is a meditation on a world growing ever more bordered and exclusive, on what richness and worth are, on what harvest means.” (eBook available on OverDrive, audiobook on Hoopla).

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier: a wonderful slow burn spooky tale about “an unnamed young woman who impetuously marries a wealthy widower, only to discover that he and his household are haunted by the memory of his late first wife, the title character.”  Be sure to check out the fantastic original 1940 Hitchcock film adaption and the forthcoming Netflix remake starring Armie Hammer, Lily James, and Kristin Scott Thomas coming this Fall.  (eBook available on OverDrive, audiobook on Hoopla).

Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman: “For more than two hundred years, the Owens women have been blamed for everything that has gone wrong in their Massachusetts town…As children, the sisters were forever outsiders, taunted, talked about, pointed at. Their elderly aunts almost seemed to encourage the whispers of witchery, with their darkened house, their love concoctions and their crowd of black cats. All Gillian and Sally wanted to do was escape…but the bonds they shared brought them back to each other, and to the magic they could not escape.”  (eBook available on OverDrive, audiobook on Hoopla).  It’s also worth revisiting the 1998 film adaption starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.

The Year of Witching by Alexis Henderson: “A young woman living in a rigid, puritanical society discovers dark powers within herself in this stunning, feminist fantasy debut.” (eBook and audiobook available on OverDrive).

Movies:

The Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009): Director Wes Anderson is known for his immaculate and quirky aesthetic and Fantastic Mr. Fox adopts a wonderfully orange Fall palate.  Enjoy the splendid autumn woods and farm scenery in this pick based on Roald Dahl’s 1970 children’s novel.

Autumn in New York (2000): “A successful middle-aged restaurateur and womanizer (Richard Gere) falls in love with a sweet young woman (Winona Ryder) who is terminally ill.”  This tear jerker features a tragic love story and the beautiful fall foliage of Central Park.

St. Elmo’s Fire (1985): follows the Brat Pack (Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, and Emilio Estevez) playing 20-somethings as they struggle to grow into adulthood set in a New England autumn.

October Sky (1999): starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Laura Dern, “tells the true story of Homer H. Hickam, Jr., a coal miner's son who was inspired by the launch of Sputnik 1 in October 1957 to take up rocketry against his father's wishes and eventually became a NASA engineer.”
