Movie Night with the Library by Brandon Priddy, Public Services Librarian As a huge film buff, one of the mildly disappointing things about the last few months is the inability to go to the movie theater to see the latest buzz worthy feature. While we can’t enjoy the big screen right now, we can have a movie night at home. So pop the popcorn because here’s an eclectic list of my recommendations. Hopefully you’ll find something cool to watch: Quiet, Cozy, and British: The Bookshop: “England, 1959. Free-spirited widow Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) risks everything to open a bookshop in a conservative East Anglian coastal town.” Available on Kanopy. The Unique Art Film: Loving Vincent: “The first fully painted feature film…tells the story of the mysterious and tragic death of the world's most famous artist, Vincent van Gogh.” Available on Kanopy. Sci-Fi: Ex Machina: “A young programmer is selected to participate in a breakthrough experiment in artificial intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a breathtaking female A.I.” Available on Kanopy. The Academy Award Winning Literary Adaption: The Hours: Three women (Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore) in different times are related by a parallel in their personal lives. One throwing a party for a friend suffering from AIDS. Another in 1949, suffering as a young wife. The last, Virginia Woolf, writing "Mrs. Dalloway.” Available on Kanopy. The 80’s Classic: Heathers: Westerburg High School's elite clique of popular girls is "The Heathers,”… Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder), who is so fed up with the Heathers and the entire peer pressure cooker that she starts running with J.D. (Christian Slater), a mysterious - and possibly psychotic - motorcycle-riding newcomer. Available on Hoopla. Horror: The VVitch: A New-England Folktale: “An exquisitely made and terrifying horror film, the age-old concepts of witchcraft, black magic and possession are innovatively brought together to tell the intimate and riveting story of one family's frightful unraveling.” Available on Kanopy. The Bildungsroman: Lady Bird: “a warm, affecting comedy about a high schooler (Saoirse Ronan) who must navigate a loving but turbulent relationship with her strong-willed mother (Laurie Metcalf) over the course of her eventful and poignant senior year of high school.” Available on Kanopy. The Off-beat Comedy: The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou: An internationally famous oceanographer, Steve Zissou, and his crew set sail on an expedition to hunt down the mysterious and possibly nonexistent Jaguar Shark that killed Zissou's partner during the documentary filming of their latest adventure.
