Music Hath Charms

by Brandon Priddy, Public Services Librarian

When I need a break from the world, I find it helpful to chill out with some of my favorite albums. Lately, I’ve had to make an inordinate amount of calls to the customer service line of a retailer that shall remain anonymous, (how exactly does one misplace a full-size bed that was marked as out for delivery?), and the subpar elevator music playing over the phone has really reminded me of the importance of good music to savor and chill out with.  Here are some picks that will put that boring-waiting-on-hold-muzak to shame and the best part is they’re all available for free instantly via Library service Hoopla:

Still on My Mind (2019) by Dido is a soothing minimalistic slow build.  “Hurricanes”, “Take You Home”, “Some Kind of Love”, and “Friends” are highlights.

Golden Hour (2018) by Kacey Musgraves is sublime and one of my favorite albums of 2018.  Musgraves won Album of the Year at the 61st Grammy Awards for this album.  “Slow Burn”, “Space Cowboy”, “Golden Hour” are all highlights.

Hollywood’s Bleeding (PA) (2019) by Post Malone. “Circles”, “Staring at The Sun”, “Sunflower” are all good picks.

Just One Look (2015) by Linda Ronstadt.  Check out “Different Drum”, “Desperado”, “Blue Bayou”, and “You’re No Good” among all her other classics on this greatest hits album.

Blue Neighbourhood (2015) by Australian singer Troye Sivan. Enjoy “Fools”, “Talk Me Down”, “Cool”, and “Lost Boy” with with some Tanqueray.

Born to Die - The Paradise Edition (2012) by Lana Del Rey.  The queen of mellowing out, listen to “Born to Die”, “Video Games”, “Dark Paradise”, “Summertime Sadness”, and “Blue Velvet” and pretend you’re a lounge singer on a scenic road trip across the U.S.

Starboy (PA) (2016) by the Weeknd.  “A Lonely Night”, “Nothing Without You”, “Die For You”, and “I Feel It Coming (feat. Daft Punk)" are my top picks.

Heartbreak Weather (2020) by Niall Horan is catchy easy listening.  Enjoy “Heartbreak Weather”, “Bend the Rules”, and “Put a Little Love on Me.”

ANTI (PA) (2016) by Rihanna.  This supremely chill album also features Drake and SZA.  Check out “Consideration”, “Same Ol’ Mistakes”, “Never Ending”, and “Love On the Brain.”

Phoenix (PA) (2018) by Rita Ora is the perfect pop music choice.  Put some pep in your step with “Anywhere”, “Let You Love Me”, “Lonely Together”, “Only Want You”, and “For You.”

I hope you find some new favorites from this selection.  If we don’t share musical tastes, remember that Hoopla has tons of other albums to borrow.  Relax with some music and practice some mindfulness during this difficult time.
