"This looks interesting...."

by Elizabeth Krebs, Public Services Librarian

I have the best job in the world as the cataloger at Mt. Lebanon Public Library. What does a cataloger do? Cataloging has two components. The first is descriptive cataloging which describes all items in the library with details such as title, author, publisher, date, pages, and illustrations without reference to its subject matter. The second component is subject cataloging: the process concerned with determining and describing the intellectual or artistic content of an item, translating that into subject headings, and finally assigning a call number so items can be found in the same area of the library together. The bottom line is that I get to look at the new things that we purchase and find the best way to showcase them in our library.

Finding something good to read can be a challenge. There are many ways to hear about a book: TV, magazine, friend, reviews and best-seller lists, and the librarians at your favorite public library. As I look through the new books, to ascertain where in the library they can best be placed, some of them are so fascinating, it is all I can do to not stop working and start reading them. But … everyday new books arrive so I must keep doing.

“This looks interesting ….” is my attempt to share with you things that are not in the mainstream and may be a bit obscure or offbeat, but look interesting and are worth checking out by someone other than me. I hope something catches your eye. Let me know, Elizabeth K.
