Honoring the work of Louise Glück, Nobel Laureate

by Sharon Bruni

Considered by many to be one of the most talented contemporary American poets, Louise Glück was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature this past Thursday "for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal." Glück had won the Pulitzer Prize in 1993 for her work the Wild Iris, she won the National Book Award in 2014 for Faithful and Virtuous Night and served as the Poet Laureate of the United States from 2003-2004.

When I take the time to read poetry, which unfortunately is not as often as I should, time stops for me as I linger on the words and let them manifest all their associations. I know the poet has accommodated for this license of interpretation, and in fact, has invited it. All the best poems are expansive.

The poet provides a new set of eyes for me to take in the quiet spaces and nuances of my world: the shifting lights and cool passages the subdued hues of life and nature. Words truly made corporeal.

Feelings that were dormant or undefined find companionship and definition. I become lighter and more observant. Recently the world is becoming heavier for me, and I look forward to spending some time absorbing the work of this esteemed poet.

Below I have copied some links to some of Louise Glück's poems that relate to this season for you to enjoy. Autumn is a perfect time for gathering poems that can linger with us on long wooded walks, and sustain us though the cold and difficult months ahead.

The link below is from a 2017 New Yorker article that published Louise Glück's poem Autumn.

The link below is the poem All Hallows from Louise Glück's the First Four Books of Poems. The Poetry Foundation website is a great place to explore poets and their poetry.
