Online Learning at the Library by Sharon Bruni

During our closure the library purchased additional online resources as well as extended credits on some of our digital content providers. The library will be providing an additional e-book content provider this summer that will supplement high demand waitlisted titles in Libby/Overdrive. We will be purchasing multiple copies of books on our summer reading list as well as the longest waitlisted titles in Libby/Overdrive. This service, AXIS 360 will be available to library patrons with a valid Mt Lebanon Public Library card. All services provided are available free of charge to Mt Lebanon Public Library card holders.

I wanted to take some time to highlight some of these services for you to explore this summer.

Gale Courses:

Gale Courses offers a wide range of highly interactive, instructor led courses that you can take entirely online.  Courses run for six weeks and new sessions begin every month. Gale Courses offer many classes on career development skills. A sample of their course offerings for business skills include: Grant Writing, Starting Your Own Business, Sales and Marketing and Job Searching. They have a strong line-up of classes that focus on building tech skills. Most of their tech classes are progressive in difficulty, beginning with introductory level courses through advanced level. Their classes cover Adobe and Microsoft applications such as: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook and Word. In addition to software applications, Gale Courses provides courses on computer programming from very basic introductory classes to classes on specific languages such as: Java, Python, C+ and C++. There are courses dedicated to game and app development as well.

Please go to the library’s web page dedicated to Gale Courses to find out the details https://www.mtlebanonlibrary.org/532/Gale-Courses

You have until 13 days after the start of classes to enroll in a class. You can pre-enroll for classes in any of the upcoming start dates:

June 17th

July 15th

August 12th

Kanopy:

Kanopy is an award-winning video on demand streaming service that features over 30,000 documentaries, classics, and Indie films as well as instructional films and lessons. It has over 6,400 videos from the Great Courses series for you to explore. Think of the potential hours of learning! The best news about watching the Great Courses on Kanopy is that it does not use any of your viewing credits, so you have unlimited viewing hours and videos!

For all other Kanopy videos the library has doubled your viewing credits per month from 5 to 10.

Kanopy is now featuring films on Social and Systemic Injustice and LGBTQ History .

Kanopy Kids provides education and inspiration videos in a wide range of topics that include language study, history, social and emotional learning skills, science and math. The content includes movies, television series and animated films. The focus age range is 2-8. Parents can implement parental controls to ensure children stay within Kanopy Kids for age-appropriate content.

CreativeBug:

CreativeBug provides unlimited access to over a thousand digital classes taught by design experts and artists. You can browse through classes, search for a specific type of class or use their featured classes as a means to discover its content. Classes are project-based so they will result in a finished work. Each class has a materials list, a printable transcript for instructions and review as well as a class discussion moderated by the instructor. You can post your finished work to a gallery. Here are some examples of possible classes: a drawing sketch book using acrylic paints, landscape hoop embroidery, handmade stationery, sewing a boxy t-shirt and making an altered book. CreativeBug is an excellent way to find some time to explore your creativity and practice a little self-care by making some time for yourself.

To sign up for unlimited access to CreativeBug classes you will need your library card.

Baker and Taylor AXIS 360:

To assist our patrons with some of the long waitlists on titles in Libby/Overdrive we have purchased AXIS 360 where you can access digital copies of our summer reading list titles as well other high demand titles. This new digital service will be available to you soon. Please look out for our roll out announcement in the upcoming week.
